Domiciliary Optometrist

You can work part time, with hours tailored to suit, and can work some days in store should you wish to give you even more variety.

Making a difference - in the community - helping the most vulnerable customers with their eyesight in the comfort of their homes offering true job satisfaction. This is the most societal and professionally rewarding role you can be involved in. Community care has a comfort feel, and having the time to work with each patient on an individual basis is highlighted in the feedback received. Patients and their families speak of a positive interaction, often noting that the visit from the Optometrist will be the only interaction that patients will receive that day or week.

You'll see a range of conditions and increased pathology, making the role clinically engaging and a refreshing change from the familiar test room

Key Duties

There is real flexibility and with a great work/life balance, you'll have more time to do the things you enjoy and be with the people you love Last appointment between 4 4.30 meaning you should be home by 5.30/6pm. You run late far less in domiciliary than you do in practice. Clinics are run on time slots rather than appointment times, giving the team the flexibility to work with and provide the best care without the tight time constraints present in retail practice. Having Semi mobile' clinic days also ensures the team have the chance to take well-earned breaks for lunch, (something you can be far pushed for in practice). Additionally, if you have a particularly difficult test, the drive and time out between patients allows the team to chat, decompress and reflect in private. This allows you to enter the next patients home with a clear head and free to provide care that is second to none.

Local scheduling teams work in the hub. Their geographical knowledge and understanding of the business ensure your day is planned to run as smoothly as possible. The internal teams will be on hand during the day for any mishaps or advice and often help adjust live clinics to ensure you have a continuous rewarding day. The team also take on board any notes of advice the field staff pass over and will consider any amendments or suggestions to make the business (and your life!) easier. They are great at helping with any transport or weather issues too!

Being on the road and partnered with only one or two other members of staff does not have to mean you are not part of a team. The directors are aware of the isolation or split that can develop between field and office staff. They work hard to ensure inclusion of all parties by arranging team building events and staff training.

Attend a shadowing day - It can help dispel the rumours about domiciliary and can highlight all the positives. Seeing the team in action, working together can help you gain an understanding of what it's like to perform such an essential and rewarding role every day! Try it! Take the opportunity of a paid, no obligation shadow day and decide for yourself if this is for you.
